We all make meaning of experience. The quality of that meaning matters.

We all make meaning of our experiences. The quality of that meaning influences how we understand ourselves, relate to others, and navigate life's challenges and opportunities.

Yet people rarely lose their footing all at once. More often, it happens gradually through uncertainty, change, disappointment, competing demands, or experiences that make it harder to trust our judgment and remain connected to what matters most.

In a world filled with competing narratives and endless information, the challenge is not simply knowing more. The challenge is making meaning wisely enough to remain grounded, purposeful, and fully human.

From personal experience to collective living

CALM begins with personal experience. The ways we make meaning of our experiences and respond to them shape not only our own lives but also the relationships, communities, organizations, and systems we help create.

What begins as an individual process becomes a collective one. The same capacities that guide our personal choices also influence how we relate to others, contribute to our communities, and exercise leadership in the lives we share.

The origins of CALM Leadership

Dr. Patrina M. Clark is a scholar-practitioner, educator, entrepreneur, nonprofit leader, and former federal senior executive whose career has spanned federal service, higher education, organizational consulting, and nonprofit leadership. Her work has focused on leadership, governance, organizational effectiveness, learning, and human development, informed by doctoral research in Human and Organizational Learning at The George Washington University.

Across four decades of professional practice and inquiry, a central question persisted: What helps people remain grounded, purposeful, and fully human amid uncertainty, change, challenge, and opportunity?

That question became the foundation for the CALM Leadership™ Framework. At its heart is a simple belief: life is meant to feel meaningful, fulfilling, and deeply aligned with who we are. While every life includes seasons of struggle, loss, and uncertainty, we possess a remarkable capacity to reconnect with clarity, purpose, joy, and possibility.

Through her writing, speaking, teaching, and consulting, Dr. Clark helps people strengthen the capacities that support human flourishing and create lives that feel more grounded, intentional, and fully their own.
